We are going to learn about Conditional sentences used for rules and plans on a Navy ship. These sentences have two parts:
1. The Condition (the cause) - uses If or When.
2. The Result (the effect) - what happens next.
Let's look at two types used in Navy life: Zero (Rules) and First (Plans)!
We use the Zero Conditional to talk about things that are always true like Navy regulations, habits, or scientific facts.
If / When + Present Simple, Present Simple
The verb in BOTH parts is the Present Simple form.
This is for routine and permanent facts! No change is expected.
We use the First Conditional to talk about a real possibility in the future. It's a plan or a warning!
If + Present Simple, will + Base Verb
The condition uses Present Simple, but the result uses will (or won't) + base verb.
The result depends on the future condition happening!
Look at the result clause to decide!
Result Verb:Present Simple (happens every time)
Result Verb: will + Base Verb (happens one time in the future)
Got it? Time for the exercises!
1. If the fire alarm sounds...
2. When a sailor stands watch...
3. If the flag ceremony begins...
4. When the ship is resupplied...
(Remember to type the verb in the base form to complete the structure: **will + ...**)
